According to USGS, on 3 April 2024, Taiwan was hit by a destructive Earthquake of 7.4 Magnitude – 18 km SSW of Hualien City, and the depth measured 34.8 km.

The M 7.4 earthquake was a force to be reckoned with, damaging numerous buildings and triggering tsunami warnings in Taiwan, Southern islands in Japan, and the Philippines. However, the authorities swiftly responded, canceling the tsunami warning and ensuring the safety of the affected areas.

A warehouse in new Taipei City crumbled. The mayor said that 50 survivors had pulled out of the rubble.

The bulldozers are clearing rocks from the roads to Hualien caused by a landslide.

Fire authorities said they are rescuing people stuck in tunnels near Hualien city, which also includes two Germans, and they have lost contact with 50 travelers who were heading back to their hotel in the national park Taroko Gorge in four minibusses.

President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen called central government agencies and local agencies to coordinate people’s safety matters. The military will also be helping in it.
